Families of the 44 Special Action Force commandos of the Philippine national Police were meeting with various government officials in a kind of "one-stop-shop" at Camp Crame on their problems and needs, when President Aquino unexpectedly dropped in on them last Wednesday afternoon. It was the second time around after the necrological rites the day after the arrival of remains of the SAF 444 from Maguindanao.
It was an unscheduled visit of the President. He had already talked lengthily with each of the families days earlier and directed various officials to see what they could to assist the families - in relation to the policemen's pensions, other benefits due from other agencies, housing for the families, one could never be returned, but the government was determined that all possible help be extended to the beriaved families.
On the day of the arrival of 44 SAF bodies in Villamor Air Base, the Philippine President was not around upon the arrival and it was said that the President was attending that day in the inauguration of Japanese car plant in Laguna. President Aquino had been roundly criticized when he failed to personally appear to receive the bodies of the fallen 44 SAF.
The nation's President is more than the head of government, more than the chief provider of government services, more than the commander-in-chief, more than the face of the nation in dealing with other countries. He is the father of the nation.
It is indeed very much a part of our national culture to go out of our way to show our sympathy in time of sorrow. Personal concern, caring for the family, oneness and solicitude perhaps more than in others. President Aquino should know all of these as he is the father of the nation.
In meeting a second time with the families of the SAF 44, President Aquino is spending so many hours with them until midnight, as he showed the human face of the government. In this time of great sorrow, this means so much grieving families - and to the rest of the nation that is also grieves with them.
